"Buffalo Bill" Cody earned his famous nickname in a one-day buffalo-hunting competition with a man named Bill Comstock, who also referred to himself as "Buffalo Bill." At the end of the day, Cody had killed 69 buffalo to Comstock's 46, giving him exclusive rights to the name.
